Offense comes alive in 15-6 win

LONDON, ON – The ThunderBolts scored season high 15 runs on a Frontier League season-high 22 hits as they defeated the London Rippers 15-6 in the rubber game at Labatt Park Friday night.

The Bolts fell behind early on a two-run homer off the bat of Shane Bagley.

In the third, Windy City loaded the bases with one out for Zach Aakhus, who singled home two runs to tie the game.

The tie score didn’t last long, as London had a big two-out rally in them in the bottom of the third. After Dustin Williams retired the first two hitters, the Rippers collected five straight hits to go on top 5-2.

It was all Windy City after that. Their two-run third began a stretch of seven straight innings with at least one run. In the fourth, two runs scored on a Chad Cregar bases loaded single. Cregar came up with the bases loaded five times in the series and knocked in eight runs in those spots. Overall, he had five RBIs in this game and 12 in the series.

T.J. McManus tied the game in the fifth on his first career home run and Cregar put the ThunderBolts on top for good with a two-run double in the sixth.

Brandon Decker, Cregar and Jareck West all went deep late in the game to pile on the runs. In all, the Bolts hit four homers, a season high.

Every player with at least one at-bat had a hit. Cregar had four and Bob Glover and Mike Torres each had three. Cregar, West and Aakhus all had multi-RBI games. Glover and Torres at the top of the order combined for seven runs and Torres stole four bases.

Williams (6-2) went 6.2 innings and picked up his league-best sixth win. Matt Schimpf started for the Rippers and took the loss, allowing seven runs in 5.1 innings.

The ThunderBolts nine-game roadtrip continues Saturday night with the first trip this year to Evansville. Blayne Weller (1-0, 4.09) will start the game for Windy City against the Otters’ Adam Champion (2-1, 3.42). The game begins at 6:35 p.m. CDT and the broadcast can be heard on WXAV, 88.3 fm and wxav.com.
