ROCKFORD, IL – The ThunderBolts scored ten unanswered runs over the final five innings to defeat the Rockford RiverHawks 15-5 and stave off a sweep at Road Ranger Stadium Thursday night.
The RiverHawks took a multi-run lead in the first inning, getting two runs on four singles. Jake Eigsti and Evan Button picked up the RBI.
Chad Cregar’s solo home run in the second put the Bolts back in it, but very quickly, the RiverHawks responded with a David Cooper two-out RBI hit in the bottom of the second. Then, Michael Hur’s second home run of the series in the third put Rockford on top 4-1.
The ThunderBolts finally got a rally going as they scored four runs in the top of the fourth. Five singles and an error contributed to the big inning as both Nick Kuroczko and Tyler Keeble came up with two-run singles to put Windy City on top.
Again Rockford responded, scoring in their fourth straight inning on a David Cooper homer in the bottom of the fourth.
Zach Aakhus’ third homer of the season gave Windy City a 6-5 lead in the fifth, and for the first time, the Bolts kept Rockford off the board in the bottom of the frame.
Windy City added a big three runs to their lead in the top of the seventh when Brandon Anderson lead off with his first home run of the year. Later in the inning, Aakhus singled home Mike Torres and, after stealing second, scored on a Cregar base hit.
The game was put away in the eighth when the Bolts sent 11 men to the plate in a five-run effort. They came up with five hits in the inning with RBI coming from Anderson, Aakhus and Keeble. An error and a wild pitch also led to runs for the Bolts as they made the score 14-5.
The final run was scored in the top of the ninth as Jason James, the all-time RiverHawk home run leader, homered in his final at bat at Road Ranger Stadium.
Shane Zegarac retired the only batter he faced for the win (1-0) and Kevin Patterson took the loss (0-2).
The ThunderBolts next head to Avon, OH to take on the Lake Erie Crushers in a three-game series at All Pro Freight Stadium. Game one will begin Friday night at 6:05 CDT. Guido Fonseca (3-10) will get the start for Windy City against Lake Erie’s Thomas Campbell (4-2). The game’s audio broadcast can be heard on Sportsjuice.com. Box Score |
