Bolts slide continues in shutout loss at Gateway

SAUGET, IL – Charlie Lisk’s first-inning grand slam gave the Gateway Grizzlies a lead they would not relinquish as they dealt the ThunderBolts their ninth straight loss, 7-0 Saturday night at GCS Ballpark.
The Bolts had their best scoring chance of the game in the first inning when Brandon Anderson led off with a single and reached third base with one out. But Ryan Juarez struck out Mike Torres and got Devin Shepherd to fly out to end the threat.
In the bottom of the first, Matt Jernstad walked the first two Grizzlie hitters before Joe Agreste singled to load the bases and Lisk sent a shot over the left field wall.
The Grizzlies got two more runs in the second when Landon Hernandez’s two-out double scored DJ Fitzgerald and Brandon Peters, who each had singled. The score was 6-0 and Jernstad made an early exit.
The ThunderBolt bullpen did a fine job, with Matt Costello, Mike Scudero, Greg Johnson and Wes Alsup combining to go 6.2 innings and allowing just one run on five hits. The only Gateway score after the second came on a Hernandez solo homer in the fifth, his 11th of the year.
The Windy City offense could not find an answer for Juarez who equaled his career high by going seven innings. He did not allow a run on four hits and improved to 4-1. Erick Carillo pitched the final two innings. It was the second straight night that the ThunderBolt offense was halted by Gateway pitching. They stranded nine runners in the game and have now gone 0-17 with runners in scoring position in the series.
Jernstad fell to 5-7 after taking the loss.
The ThunderBolts will be looking for their first win of August when Dustin Williams (8-5) takes the GCS Ballpark mound Sunday evening. He’ll be opposed by Grizzlies right-hander Blake Barber (4-3). The game is set to begin at 6:05 p.m. CDT and can be heard on WXAV 88.3 fm and wxav.com.
