ThunderBolts drop third straight07/31/2011 9:00 PM
CRESTWOOD, IL – The ThunderBolts took an early lead Sunday night but saw the Rockford RiverHawks score seven unanswered runs to defeat Windy City 9-5 at Standard Bank Stadium. It was the Bolts’ third straight loss.
The RiverHawks scored first, plating two runs in the second after they loaded the bases with no outs. A Carlos Dominguez sacrifice fly and Freddy Parejo RBI single made it 2-0.
The ThunderBolts answered quickly getting a run-scoring groundout off the bat of Chase Porch to score Zach Aakhus in the bottom of the second. Then in the third, Windy City loaded the bases with nobody out and Aakhus came up and lined a two-run single to give the ThunderBolts their first lead of the series at 3-2. Aakhus went 4-4 in the game.
The ThunderBolts added two more runs in the fourth when, with runners at first and second and one out, Devin Shepherd hit a seemingly inning-ending groundball to third. Jake Eigsti couldn’t handle it, though, and after Jason James misplayed it in left, the double error allowed two runs to score.
That was all the offense the ThunderBolts would get, though, as they stranded six runners over the final five frames.
Rockford began their comeback in the fifth with two runs on three hits. David Cooper’s RBI single and Matt Greener’s sacrifice fly scored the runs. Then in the sixth, they got one more to tie it. Greg Van Horn doubled and scored on Cooper’s two-out two-base hit.
The RiverHawks took the lead for good in the seventh when Jason James doubled and Greener singled, with James scoring on a Quentin Luquette error that also advanced Greener to second. He scored on a Luis Parache sacrifice fly, making it 7-5.
They added two more runs for insurance in the eighth. Cooper came up with another RBI hit, scoring Van Horn and Eigsti knocked in Cooper on a double to make the final score 9-5.
Brett Scarpetta gave up five runs in six innings, but came away with the win (6-3) and Mike Scudero took the loss in relief for Windy City (1-1).
The ThunderBolts and RiverHawks conclude their series Monday morning at 10:05 at Standard Bank Stadium. Joe Scumaci (3-2) gets the start for Rockford. The ThunderBolts have not yet named a starter. The game can be heard on WXAV 88.3 fm and WXAV.com. |
