Windy City drops rubber game at Washington05/29/2011 7:41 PM
 WASHINGTON, PA – Luis Rivera’s two-out RBI single in the bottom of the eighth capped the Washington Wild Things comeback as they defeated the ThunderBolts 3-2 at CONSOL Energy Park Sunday night, 3-2.
It was a great pitchers’ duel early with Windy City starter Todd Privett and Washington starter Vidal Nuno not giving up much in the first four innings. Each team had just two hits through the fourth, but the Bolts finally broke through in the fifth.
Garrett Regan led off the inning with a double and Chris Wade followed, trying to bunt him to third. He failed on his first two attempts, and so was told to swing away. It worked out for the ThunderBolts as Wade doubled off the left field wall, scoring Regan. After a Nick Kuroczko sacrifice, Chase Porch doubled deep to left, bringing Chris Wade home and giving Windy City the 2-0 lead.
It didn’t take long for the Wild Things to answer. With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Blake Ochoa and Derek Perren hammered back-to-back doubles to cut the ThunderBolts’ lead in half.
Todd Privett departed after six innings, having allowed just one run on five hits while striking out four, but the bullpen couldn’t hold the lead.
With Greg Johnson pitching, Scott Lawson singled to begin the seventh. After an Emilio Ontiveros sacrifice bunt, Ochoa came through again with a game-tying single.
Then in the eighth, Wes Alsup, who got out of the seventh-inning jam, walked Ernie Banks. Banks was replaced by pinch runner Zach Stanton, who promptly stole second base. Then, with two outs, Luis Rivera drove him in on a single, giving the Things a 3-2 lead, the score that would become final.
Nuno pitched eight innings, allowed just six hits and one run and struck out eight, earning the win (2-1). Alsup received the loss (0-1) and Taylor Wulf recorded the last three outs for his first save.
After taking Memorial Day off, the Windy City baseballers will be back in action on Tuesday against the Evansville Otters at Standard Bank Stadium in Crestwood. Dustin Williams (2-0) will take the ball for the 7:05 first pitch. The game begins a three-game series and six-game homestand. The Bolts will be offering two-for-one tickets at the box office for Tuesday’s game. The game will also be broadcast on WXAV 88.3 fm and wxav.com with pregame beginning at 6:45 CDT. |
