Windy City drops game 3 in late comeback09/11/2010 8:21 PM
(TRAVERSE CITY, MI) – The ThunderBolts were pushed to the brink of elimination Saturday night with a 6-3 loss to the Traverse City Beach Bums. The Beach Bums took a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five series with the come-from-behind victory.
Michael Moore of Traverse City and Brent Solich locked horns in a great pitching matchup through the first five innings. After a Ryan Basham first inning single, Moore set down the next 13 ThunderBolt hitters in order before the Bolts bats broke out in the sixth.
In a scoreless tie, Michael Torres led off the sixth inning with a single before Nick Kuroczko bunted him into scoring position. Brandon Anderson’s bloop double plated the game’s first run. After Gilberto Mejia singled, Anderson scored on a Basham sacrifice fly. The ThunderBolts scoring, for the whole game as it turned out, finished on a Zach Aakhus RBI single.
It was 3-0 Bolts for a brief period before the Beach Bums answered with a run off Solich in the bottom of the sixth. Chase Burch was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and eventually scored on a Brad Miller RBI single.
The seventh inning is where the Bolts fell apart. Ryan Quigley came out of the bullpen, replacing Solich, and walked the first two batters he faced before hitting Michael Diaz to load the bases with no outs.
Quigley departed, but Greg Johnson allowed two base hits that netted four runs to give the Beach Bums their first lead before he had to leave with an injury.
The Beach Bums added an insurance run in the eighth to make the score 6-3. Windy City then put the tying run on base in the ninth with no outs before Jeremy Hamilton grounded into a double play and Mike Mooney popped out to end the game, moving Traverse City within one win of their first trip to the Frontier League Championship Series.
Scott Dunn picked up the win in relief, throwing 2.1 scoreless innings. Quigley took the loss and Scott Mueller earned his second save.
The series continues Sunday at 4:05 CDT. The Bolts need a win to keep their season going. Sean Toler (8-1) will head to the mound for Windy City. Traverse City has not yet announced a starter. The game can be heard on WXAV 88.3 fm and wxav.com. |
