Windy City walks off for fifth time this season07/07/2009 9:36 PM
Robert Perry delivered a bases loaded single in the bottom of the ninth to score a pair of runs and give the Windy City ThunderBolts their fifth walkoff win of the season, downing the Kalamazoo Kings 5-4.
Windy City wasted no time in getting on the board in the first inning as Gilberto Mejia singled and stole second. Guillermo Martinez followed with a walk. The pair then worked a double steal to put runners on second and third with no outs. After a strikeout, Bernard Robert tossed a wild pitch, scoring Mejia and moving Martinez to third. J. T. Restko then took a 1-1 pitch into right for a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 ThunderBolts advantage.
Staying 2-0 into the sixth, the Kings pulled ahead with three runs, two of them unearned to go up 3-2. Undeterred, Windy City batted in the bottom of the inning and with one out, Vinnie Scarduzio delivered his eighth homer of the year, a titanic blast to right, to tie the game at 3-3.
The euphoria was shortlived as Simon Williams took Dustin Pease deep to begin the top of the seventh to give Kalamazoo a 4-3 lead.
The Bolts counter punch wouldn’t come until the ninth. J. T. Restko singled to lead off the inning. Nate Hall followed suit and Windy City had runners on first and second with nobody out. Tyler Farrar and Damian Walcott came into pinch run for Restko and Hall. Wade Lamont then walked to load the bases. After a strikeout, Robert Perry worked the count to 2-2 before singling through the right side, scoring Farrar and Walcott for the 5-4 win.
Nick Hall (3-1) picked up the win in relief as he finished off a fantastic stint for the Windy City bullpen in which they threw three scoreless innings allowing just one hit. Tommy Mejia (3-1) took the loss for Kalamazoo.
The second game of the series features Ross Stout (5-1, 2.17) on the hill for Windy City against Brandon Parillo (2-3, 3.48) for the Kings. Wednesday “Return of the Cheetahs” Part 2.
