EVANSVILLE, IN - A late season pitchers duel between the Windy City ThunderBolts and the Evansville Otters endedwith Evansville coming out on top 3-0.
Through five innings, Windy City starting pitcher John Mikolaicyk had more pick offs then there were combined hits. He picked off JJ Cruz in the bottom of the third inning and Gary Mattis in the bottom of the sixth.
Neither team reached base on a hit until the sixth inning. A double by Windy City outfielder Cam Phelts broke the goose eggs on the scoreboard. Later in the frame, Phelts was caught trying to steal third.
In the bottom of the inning, the Otters (39-48) got a leadoff walk from Cruz. The next man to the plate, Clayton Keyes, singled to right-center field and Giovanni DiGiacomo walked on four pitches. A passed ball scored the first run of the game, and a wild pitch scored the second as the Otters quickly built a 2-0 lead. An RBI single by Randy Bednar capped off a thre-run sixth inning for Evansville.
Mikolaicyk (3-6) tossed 5.2 innings, conceding two hits and three earned runs walking six and striking out three to take the loss. Bryce Hellgeth pitched a spotless 1.1 innings, striking out two and Jacob Newman tossed a scoreless eighth inning.
Chip Korbacher (1-0) worked six scoreless innings, allowing one hit, walking two and striking out five for the win.
JJ Figueroa, Henry Kusiak, and Michael Seegers had the only other hits for the Bolts (34-53).
Windy City is back at Bosse Field Thursday evening for the series finale. Michael Barker (3-7, 6.62) starts for the Bolts against Parker Brahms (5-6, 2.98) for Evansville. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 CDT and the broadcast can be found at wcthunderbolts.com. |
