TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. -- Danny Sawyer's two-run homer headlined an 11-hit attack against Traverse City ace David Nathanson, and the Windy City ThunderBolts (9-14) held on for a 6-5 victory over the Beach Bums (16-7) despite a late lightning delay on Saturday night at Wuerfel Park.
Entering the game undefeated with a 1.53 ERA, Nathanson (4-1) was battered by the bottom third of the 'Bolts' lineup, Brett Amyx, Sawyer and Scott Billak, who combined to go 6-for-9 against Nathanson with four runs scored and four RBI.
After sitting out the first game of the series due to illness, Amyx returned with a 3-for-5 effort to pace the Windy City offense.
ThunderBolts starter Dallas Sims (1-0) allowed two hits and two runs over five strong innings for the victory in his first professional start.
The triumph did not come easily.
Traverse City cut into a 6-2 ThunderBolts lead with two runs in the sixth inning against Jason Lowey, then trimmed the score to 6-5 with a run in the seventh against Isaac Hess.
In the eighth, the Beach Bums had runners at first and second with two outs against Hess when the game was delayed 66 minutes on account of lightning. Windy City brought in Matt Petty when play resumed, and the closer responded by recording the last four outs of the game to pick up his second save of the season.
Having split the first two games of the series, the 'Bolts and Beach Bums play the series finale on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. CDT. Right-hander Adam Dominick will make his pro debut as the starting pitcher for Windy City.
