Bolts comeback bid falls short

BOX SCORE

WASHINGTON, PA- The Windy City ThunderBolts fell to the Washington Wild Things 9-8 Tuesday night at Wild Things Park in the first game of a three-game series Wednesday evening.

Windy City (20-26) starting pitcher Adrien Reese (0-3) threw five innings, enduring ten hits and eight runs, six of those earned, while walking two and striking out five.

In the bottom off the first inning, the Wild Things took the lead with a two-run home run by Wagner LaGrange and a solo home run by Andrew Czech for a 3-0 lead.

The Wild Things shred an 8-0 advantage in the bottom of the second inning from an RBI single by Tommy Caulfield to begin the scoring. LaGrange added his third and fourth RBIs of the evening with a two-run double to left field, making it a 6-0 Wild Things lead.  A hit by pitch by Tristian Peterson and an RBI single by Robert Chayka accumulated a commanding 8-0 Washington lead through two innings.

The score remained untouched until the ThunderBolts dented the scoreboard in the top of the seventh inning.

A trail of five consecutive hits led to Jake Boone driving in two runs with his second knock of the evening, bringing the Bolts deficit to 8-2. Following a defensive substitution, Carson Matthews cleared the bases with a two-run triple removing Justin Showalter (4-1) from the contest. Windy City designated hitter Peyton Isaacson hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Matthews to cap off a five run top of the seventh for the Bolts trailing 8-5.

The Wild Things added more fuel to their fire with a sacrifice fly by Abraham Sequera in the bottom of the seventh inning for a 9-5 Washington lead.

With a four-run deficit in the top of the eighth inning, Windy City again battled back in the ball game.

Following a Jonathan Waite walk, Dan Robinson singled to center. Troy Viola doubled, driving in a run and cutting the deficit to 9-6. Next, ThunderBolts right-fielder Will Riley launched a two-run double putting the Bolts within a run at 9-8 in the top of the eighth inning.

The Wild Things' Lukas Young came on in relief for the Wild Things in the top of the eighth with Riley at second base and one out. Young forced a pop out from Boone, and struck out Mathews swinging, stranding Riley on second base.

Following a scoreless outing from ThunderBolts pitcher Cal Djuraskovic, the Bolts looked for the comeback in the top of the ninth inning.

Issacson crushed a pitch off Young to right field to the wall, but leaping to make the catch and preserve the game for the Wild Things robbing Issacson in right field was Anthony Brocato. Young retired the Bolts in order for his fifth save of the campaign and a 9-8 Wild Things win.

Shwwalter (4-1) earned the win, tossing 6.1 IP, allowing ten hits over five earned runs while walking one and striking out one in the victory for the Wild Things.

The ThunderBolts received multi-hit performances by Robinson, Boone, Viola, Riley, and Paul Coumoulos.

The ThunderBolts are back in action Wednesday night for a 5:05 CT match up against the Washington Wild Things. Logan Schmitt (1-1, 2.33) is scheduled to take the mound for the ThunderBolts in game two.
