ThunderBolts split doubleheader on pair of walk-offs06/14/2023 9:49 PM
CRESTWOOD, IL – Will Riley’s two-out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning won game two of a doubleheader for the ThunderBolts over the Evansville Otters, 3-2 at Ozinga Field Wednesday night. The Otters took the opener 2-1 in sudden death. Taylor Sugg pitched seven strong innings in the opener, allowing only one run and striking out seven, but he faced a deficit after a Jomar Reyes RBI double for Evansville (17-12) in the top of the sixth. The ThunderBolts (11-18) responded immediately as Bren Spillane brought home a run on a two-out single in the bottom of the inning. The Bolts had chances to win with runners in scoring position the final three innings but it was the Otters who delivered the knockout blow on a Jacob Olson walk-off double in the sudden death ninth inning. Jon Beymer (1-0) got the win and Daiveyon Whittle (2-1) was saddled with the loss. Game two was another pitchers’ duel as Kenny Mathews carried a shutout into the sixth inning. He had a 2-0 lead behind Micah Yonamine’s two-run homer in the second inning. Evansville came back to tie the score with two runs in the top of the sixth and appeared to have set up another extra innings affair. The first two ThunderBolts retired in the bottom of the seventh but Dan Robinson kept the game alive by legging out an infield single. After he stole second, Riley singled him home to deliver the Bolts a one-run win. Derrick Edington (1-1) was the winner and Leoni De La Cruz (0-1) took the loss. The rubber match of the three-game series is set for Thursday night as the ThunderBolts become the Windy City Sliders on White Castle wrestling Thursday. The game will be followed by an EGO Pro Wrestling show. Adrien Reese (0-1, 3.14) makes the start for the Bolts against Evansville’s Tim Holdgrafer (4-2, 2.68). First pitch from Ozinga Field is set for 6:35 and fans not in attendance can catch the broadcast through wcthunderbolts.com. |
