SCHAUMBURG, IL – The ThunderBolts dropped their second straight game Friday night as the Schaumburg Boomers scored in four straight innings to take the opener of a three-game series 5-2 at Wintrust Field. The ThunderBolts (26-42) took an early lead thanks to a first-inning error. After Kole Kaler reached on the defensive miscue, Dan Robinson walked and Jake Boone’s single loaded the bases with one out. The Bolts were held to just one run in the inning on a Bren Spillane sacrifice fly. The Bolts had opportunities to extend their lead but they stranded five base runners over the first three innings. After struggling in his first professional outing, Adam Wheaton was much stronger out of the gate on Friday. Windy City’s rookie hurler did not allow a hit in the first two innings but the Boomers (37-32) got to him in the middle frames. Alex Steinbach hit his first professional home run to tie the game in the third and Schaumburg captured the lead on a Braxton Davidson RBI single in the fourth. In a near-identical rally to their run-scoring first inning, the Bolts tied the game in the fifth. Kole Kaler singled and came home on a Spillane sacrifice fly. But Schaumburg broke the tie in the bottom of the inning and pulled away. They got a Blake Berry RBI double to make it 3-2. In the sixth, Chase Dawson homered and William Salas hit an RBI single that put the Boomers ahead 5-2. Shumpei Yoshikawa (5-8) struck out 11 and gave up just one earned run in six innings for the win. Wheaton (0-2) took the loss, allowing three runs in five innings. Game two from Wintrust Field on Saturday night will feature Bryan Ketchie (3-4, 5.07) making his second start for the Bolts against Schaumburg’s Aaron Glickstein (4-4, 3.56).
