Slow start dooms ThunderBolts in loss to Greys07/29/2022 10:15 PM
CRESTWOOD, IL – The Empire State Greys scored four runs in the first inning and cruised to their fourth win of the year, beating the ThunderBolts 10-4 at Ozinga Field Friday night. The Greys (4-60) got off to a hot start, taking a lead just two batters in to the game. Liam McArthur hit a leadoff single and scored when Magglio Ordonez, Jr. reached on an error. Then former ThunderBolt Manny Garcia doubled and John Benevolent hit a three-run homer to make it 4-0. The ThunderBolts (24-39) settled down as Adam Wheaton, making his pro debut on the mound, put three straight zeroes on the scoreboard. In the bottom of the fourth, Jake Boone singled and scored on a Matt Morgan base hit. Empire State pulled away with two runs in the fifth on a Garcia two-run single. He homered in the seventh and finished the game with three hits and four RBIs in his return to Crestwood. Dan Robinson hit an RBI single in the fifth, Jairus Richards homered in the sixth and Morgan doubled home a run in the eighth but the Bolts were fighting an uphill battle and couldn’t climb closer than four runs behind. Johsson Arias (2-4) allowed three runs in five-plus innings and secured the win. Wheaton (0-1) took the loss, going five innings and giving up six runs. The series continues on Saturday night. It is Superhero Night presented by Trinity Christian College at Ozinga Field, featuring appearances by Captain America Wonder Woman and Spider-Man. The game will be followed by Camp Out Night. Garrett Christman (2-4, 5.92) gets the start for the ThunderBolts and Empire State counters with Andres Rodriguez (0-4, 11.31).
