ThunderBolts shut down in loss to New Jersey07/24/2022 12:12 AM
LITTLE FALLS, NJ – The ThunderBolts jumped out to an early 1-0 lead but couldn’t keep the offense afloat as they dropped their second straight contest to the New Jersey Jackals, 3-1 at Yogi Berra Field Saturday night. Daryl Myers led off the ballgame with a solo home run, his team-leading ninth homer of the year. Since moving into the leadoff spot two weeks ago, it was the third time in nine games that he has opened the game with a long ball. Despite the strong start, the ThunderBolts (23-35) could not keep the momentum. They managed only three more hits the rest of the game. Miguel Ausua pitched well but New Jersey (29-29) got to him in the fourth inning. Alfredo Marte doubled and George Bell, Jr. hit a two-run homer that put the Jackals ahead for good. They added an insurance run in the seventh on Josh Rehwaldt’s RBI groundout, making the score 3-1. The ThunderBolts, meanwhile, put only two runners in scoring position the whole game and aside from Myers’s homer, never got a man to third base. Angelo Baez and Dylan Peiffer combined to retire the final ten Windy City hitters. Baez (5-3) allowed just a run on four hits over seven innings to earn the win while Peiffer was perfect over two frames to earn his first save. Ausua (2-5) took the loss despite a strong outing. He gave up two runs over six innings. The ThunderBolts will look to avoid the sweep at Yogi Berra Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Garrett Christman (1-4, 5.91) will make the start for the Bolts against New Jersey’s Nicholas DeSalvo (1-3, 5.94). First pitch is scheduled for 12:05 CDT and the broadcast can be found through wcthunderbolts.com. |
