CRESTWOOD, IL – The ThunderBolts lost an early lead but bounced back to win the opener against the Schaumburg Boomers, 6-5, at Ozinga Field Friday night. A two-out error in the top of the first inning gave the Boomers (11-8) an early 1-0 lead, but the ThunderBolts (11-8) came back strong with a big second inning. Their rally also came after two outs. With two on base, Brynn Martinez smashed a double down the right field line to put the Bolts ahead 2-1. The next man up, Jose Layer, hit a two-run homer, his first of the year. Jairus Richards followed with his fourth home run of the season. The back-to-back long balls gave Windy City a 5-1 lead. Schaumburg came back to tie the score the next half inning. Miguel Ausua issued two walks and hit a batter and faced Braxton Davidson with the bases loaded. Davidson captured the league-lead with his ninth home run of the year, a grand slam that tied the score. In the fourth, the ThunderBolts took the lead for good. With two outs, Martinez singled. He was on the move when the next batter, Jose Layer hit a single to right field. An errant throw back to the infield allowed Martinez to score, giving the ThunderBolts a 6-5 lead, which would go on to be the final. Neil Abbatiello (1-0) pithed 1.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen for his first win and Justin Miller tossed 3.1 shutout frames for his second save. Kyle Arjona (1-1) took the loss for Schaumburg. The Bolts will go for the abbreviated two-game sweep on Saturday night, 80’s Night at Ozinga Field. Tyler Thornton (2-2, 7.58) makes the start for Windy City against Schaumburg’s Erik Martinez (1-1, 2.08).
