Florence's surge knocks out ThunderBolts in middle game

CRESTWOOD, IL – The ThunderBolts jumped out to a 4-1 lead before seeing the Florence Y’alls score five unanswered runs in a 6-4 loss at Ozinga Field Wednesday night.

Florence (49-35) scored first when Luis Pintor hit a one-out single in the top of the first inning. He eventually came home on a Trevor Craport sacrifice fly.

The ThunderBolts (38-48) tied the score in the bottom of the second. Jace Mercer walked and stole second base. Rob Weissheier doubled for the third time in his last four games to score him.

Mercer put the Bolts in front for the first time in the third. After John Sechen and Payton Robertson walked, he hit a two-out, three-run homer, his third of the year, that made the score 4-1.

The lead was short-lived as Florence came back with four runs in the top of the fourth. Harrison DiNicola’s two-run double got the Y’alls within one and Andres Rios tied it with an RBI single. Connor Crane followed with a double that made it 5-4.

Florence starter Jonaiker Villalobos settled in, retiring eight consecutive after the Mercer home run. Villalobos and three relievers combined to prevent the ThunderBolts from reaching second base the rest of the night.

The Y’alls added insurance in the ninth when Jordan Brower singled and Crane brought him on a sacrifice fly to make the final score 6-4.

Villalobos (5-5) allowed only three hits over six innings and picked up the win. Logan Wiley (6-2) suffered his first loss since July 9, lasting six innings and giving up five runs.

The rubber match of the three game set is scheduled for Thursday night, White Castle Wresting Thursday at Ozinga Field, featuring a postgame show from Zelo Pro Wrestling. Bryan Ketchie (2-5, 4.96) gets the start for Windy City against Florence’s Johnathon Tripp (8-1, 4.08).
