Weissheier’s Slam Sets Stage for Series Win

SAUGET, IL – The Windy ThunderBolts knocked off the Gateway Grizzlies, 12-10, to win the rubber game of a three-game series on Thursday night at GCS Ballpark. The Bolts (34-40) have won four of their last five series.

In the first inning, the Bolts worked deep counts against Gateway starting pitcher Jorge Tavarez. After loading the bases with two outs, Rob Weissheier fouled off consecutive two-strike pitches. On the 30th pitch of the inning, Weissheier blasted a grand slam over the left field wall to push the Bolts ahead, 4-0.

In the second, Gateway cut the lead in half on Jack Harris’ RBI single. It was Harris’ first pro hit. After the hit, the Bolts infield thought time was called and threw the ball into the third base dugout, attempting to give Harris a keepsake for his accomplishment. The umpires ruled time wasn’t out and another run scored.

The next two innings were a stale mate. Both teams scored one run in the third and two runs in the fourth, making it 7-5 Bolts.

Jose Rosario’s third homer of the series brought Gateway within one run, 7-6.

The Bolts took their biggest lead of the night in the sixth, when five walks led to five runs, capped by Zac Taylor’s two-run single.

Gateway cut the Bolts lead down to three runs in the sixth. Harris had another RBI base hit. Jay Prather delivered a two-run double.

Rosario collected an RBI double in the ninth, bringing the tying run to the plate. However, the Bolts called on Layne Schnitz-Paxton out of the bullpen. He got the final two outs to close his first pro save.

Kenny Mathews (6-8) earned the win with five innings of six-run ball. Jorge Tavarez suffered the loss, giving up eight runs in 5.1 innings.

The Bolts head to Joliet for a three-game series, beginning Friday night at 7:05 CT. For live coverage and tickets, fans can visit wcthunderbolts.com
