Robinsons home run beats Evansville08/05/2021 10:14 PM
CRESTWOOD, IL – Dan Robinson hit a solo home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning and the ThunderBolts beat the Evansville Otters 2-1 to take the series Thursday night at Ozinga Field. Tyler Thornton of the ThunderBolts (26-36) and Evansville’s Polo Portela engaged in a great pitcher’s duel for most of the game. Through four innings, there were only two total hits on the board, one for each side. The Otters (39-23) broke the tie in the top of the fifth. They loaded the bases with nobody out on two singles and a walk and a Michael Gangwish sacrifice fly got the scoring started. They loaded the bases again with only one out but Thornton struck out two in a row to escape with just a 1-0 deficit. For Portela, the lead almost held up. He had a shutout on just two hits through seven innings but Peyton Isaacson got aboard with a single in the eighth. Payton Robertson followed with an RBI triple to tie the score. Robertson attempted to give the Bolts a lead but was thrown out trying to steal home. That left the score tied 1-1 into the bottom of the ninth. Taylor Wright retired the first two batters he faced, but after getting ahead of Robinson 1-2, the Windy City outfielder launched the next pitch over the right field wall for the ThunderBolts’ first walk-off win of the year. Kyle Johnson (2-0) pitched a scoreless ninth for the win and Wright (0-4) took the loss. Thornton received no decision despite seven innings and ten strikeouts. The ThunderBolts begin a six-game road trip on Friday evening with a 6:30 start time in Schaumburg. Kenny Mathews (3-8, 4.93) starts for Windy City and the Boomers counter with Andrew Dean (4-5, 3.96). Links to the audio and video broadcasts can be found at wcthunderbolts.com. |
