ThunderBolts pull away to 12-4 win

CRESTWOOD, IL – The ThunderBolts scored ten unanswered runs to break a 2-2 tie on their way to a 12-4 win over the Lake Erie Crushers in the finale of a three-game series at Ozinga Field Sunday evening.

Lake Erie (22-19) struck first with a Trevor Achenbach RBI single in the third inning but the ThunderBolts (15-25) struck back immediately. Rob Weissheier hit an RBI triple and scored on a Jack Strunc base hit.

The Crushers tied it up with a run in the fifth inning, but again the Bolts responded. Strunc put them back on top with another RBI single in the bottom of the frame and Zach Racusin padded the lead with a two-out, two-run hit that made the score 5-2.

In the sixth inning, Peyton Isaacson picked up an RBI hit and Strunc drove in his third run of the game on a fielder’s choice. Then the game was put away in a five-run seventh. Rob Calabrese and Racusin each hit RBI singles but the big hit came from Weissheier, who hit his second triple of the game and third of the week, bringing home two more runs.

Lake Erie plated two men in the ninth but saw their eight-game winning streak against the ThunderBolts come to a crashing halt.

Miguel Ausua (4-1) allowed two runs over five innings for the win and Paul Hall, Jr. (2-2) lasted 4.1 innings and gave up five runs, suffering the loss.

The ThunderBolts’ six-game home stand continues on Tuesday as they welcome the Southern Illinois Miners to town. Game one is a Value Tuesday at Ozinga Field, featuring $2 tickets and hot dogs. On the field, Tyler Thornton (4-4, 2.18) gets the start for Windy City. Links to the audio and video broadcasts can be found at wcthunderbolts.com.
