Evansville's late run puts away ThunderBolts

Otters 11 Bolts 4

EVANSVILLE, IN – The Evansville Otters scored eight runs over their final two innings to pull away from the ThunderBolts in an 11-4 final at Bosse Field Sunday evening.

For the third straight game, the Otters (38-27) scored a first-inning run as David Cronin walked and came in on a Ryan Long sacrifice fly.

The ThunderBolts (28-38) quickly answered when Taisei Fukuhara walked and eventually scored on an error but Evansville recaptured the lead in the following half inning. An RBI double for Tanner Wetrich and a Cronin RBI single pushed the Otters ahead 3-1.

The Bolts’ response was again quick as Christian Funk walked, Brynn Martinez singled and Chase Cockrell hit a double to score a run. They had runners at second and third with one out but weren’t able to tie or take the lead.

After the early flurry of runs, starters Chris Washington and Jake Welch settled in and neither team scored again until the seventh.

That’s when Evansville broke the game open as Cronin tripled and scored on a wild pitch. After a walk and a single, Carlos Castro put the game out of reach with a three-run homer. A Hunter Cullen sacrifice fly made it 8-2 before the ThunderBolts had another chance to bat.

They tried to make it interesting in the top of the eighth as Cockrell and Tyler Alamo hit back-to-back homers to pull the Bolts within four.

The Otters drew four walks in the bottom of the inning, two with the bases loaded as they put the game away with three more runs.

Welch (6-3) allowed two runs (one earned) in 6.2 innings for the win and Washington (2-7) allowed three runs in six innings for the loss.

The ThunderBolts begin a six-game home stand on Tuesday. The Washington Wild Things come to town for a 7:05 start in game one. Sean Leland (0-1, 5.03) takes the mound for the ThunderBolts against Washington’s John Havird (4-4, 4.00). It is $2 Ticket Tuesday at Ozinga Field and fans not in attendance can listen in at wcthunderbolts.com.
