Late homers guide Bolts to 6-5 win

Bolts 6 Otters 5

EVANSVILLE, IN – Riley Krane’s solo home run in the ninth inning was the last word in a back-and-forth affair between the ThunderBolts and the Evansville Otters Saturday night. The Bolts came out on top 6-5 at Bosse Field.

Windy City (23-35) got on the board first as Omar Obregon singled to lead off the ballgame and scored on an Axel Johnson base hit.

Larry Balkwill’s fourth-inning home run made the lead 2-0 and the ThunderBolts also got an RBI double from Terrance Robertson and an RBI single from Obregon in the fourth to go ahead 4-0.

The Otters (28-30) came back to tie the score when ThunderBolt starter Connor Bach ran into control problems in the bottom of the fourth. Three walks, a hit batter and a wild pitch netted the Otters two runs. They got two more the next inning on a Jeff Gardner sacrifice fly and a Zach Welz RBI single.

The game remained tied until the top of the eighth inning when Tyler Straub hit a solo homer to put the ThunderBolts back ahead at 5-4. Travis Harrison responded in the bottom of the inning with a solo shot of his own to tie the score.

Krane led off the next inning and took a 2-0 pitch over the centerfield wall, putting the ThunderBolts in front for good as Jack Andersen struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth for his fourth save.

Joel Toribio (1-2) struck out four and allowed a run in two innings for the win. The Bolts struck out 16 Otters batters overall. Mitchell Aker (1-3) allowed both late home runs and took the loss for Evansville.

The three-game series wraps up on Sunday afternoon as Braulio Torres-Perez (1-0, 1.50) makes his second start of the year for the Bolts against Evansville’s Austin Nicely (4-3, 3.76). First pitch from Bosse Field is set for 2:05 and the broadcast can be heard on WXAV 88.3 FM and wxav.com.
