Gateway blitzes Bolts in 12-3 loss

Grizzlies 12 Bolts 3

SAUGET, IL – The Gateway Grizzlies scored six runs in the third inning to overcome an early ThunderBolts lead. Gateway went on to score in four straight innings to beat the Bolts 12-3 at GCS Credit Union Ballpark Wednesday night.

Five of the first six batters reached for the ThunderBolts (16-30), who scored three runs in the first inning. After Omar Obregon and Axel Johnson singled, Blair Beck walked to load the bases and Tyler Straub singled home two runs. Larry Balkwill followed with an RBI base hit that made the score 3-0.

Gateway (19-29) answered, scoring a run on an error in the second inning. Then they broke out in the third. Paul Russo, Cody Livesay and Brent Sakurai had RBI hits and Artemis Kadkhodaian hit a sacrifice fly to put the Grizzlies ahead 7-3.

Matt Gonzalez’s RBI single and Livesay’s run-scoring groundout extended the lead to 9-3 after four. Trae Santos hit an RBI single in the fifth inning and a two-run homer in the seventh to put the game out of reach.

The Bolts had no lack of baserunners as they finished with nine hits, but they left nine on base and were unable to mount a rally after the first inning.

Alec Kisena (4-2) was the winning pitcher. He allowed three runs on eight hits over 5.2 innings. Paddy Ledet (3-5) gave up seven runs in three innings and took the loss. Devin Raftery was the bright spot on the ThunderBolts pitching staff, striking out all three men he faced in the eighth inning.

The ThunderBolts and Grizzlies wrap up their series on Wednesday night. Eddie Avila (0-3, 6.64) makes the game three start against Gateway’s Taso Stathopoulos (0-1, 4.97). First pitch from GCS Credit Union Ballpark is scheduled for 7:05 and the broadcast can be heard on WXAV 88.3 FM and wxav.com.
