Bolts lose late lead in 4-2 loss

Bums 4 Bolts 2

CRESTWOOD, IL – The Traverse City Beach Bums scored four runs over the final three innings to knock off the ThunderBolts 4-2 at Standard Bank Stadium Sunday evening.

The Bolts (15-29) racked up 12 hits total and jumped on the scoreboard early, picking up a second-inning run. Larry Balkwill doubled and, with two outs, Ronnie Healy knocked him in on a single.

They added another run in the third, getting back-to-back two outs hits. Blair Beck tripled and scored on a Tyler Straub single, making the score 2-0.

The ThunderBolts continued to get runners on base against Reinaldo Lopez as they got at least one man to second base in each of the first seven innings. After the solid offensive start, though, they went hitless over their final nine at bats with runners in scoring position.

After Jake Welch had dominated through six innings, the Beach Bums (20-24) broke through in the seventh inning. Kendall Patrick walked, moved to third on a single and scored on a fielder’s choice.

They took their first lead in the eighth as the first two batters reached on a single and an error. After a passed ball, the Bolts intentionally walked Will Kengor to load the bases. Luke Lowery came up with the game-winning hit, a two-run single, and Kengor padded the lead when he scored on a wild pitch.

Kenneth Knudsen (3-0) pitched two scoreless innings of relief for the win while Jake Welch (3-2) allowed just two earned runs over seven innings but took the loss. John Michael Knighton threw a scoreless ninth inning for his seventh save.

The ThunderBolts will wrap up the season’s first half with a six-game road trip that begins on Monday in Gateway. Connor Bach (0-1, 8.44) makes the game one start against Gateway’s Michael Elwood (4-2, 2.97). First pitch from GCS Credit Union Ballpark is scheduled for 7:05 and the broadcast can be heard on WXAV 88.3 FM and wxav.com.
