ThunderBolts ride power surge to series win

Bolts 8 Miners 4

CRESTWOOD, IL – The Windy City ThunderBolts hit three home runs to come back from an early 3-1 deficit and defeat the Southern Illinois Miners 8-4 at Standard Bank Stadium Sunday night.

Nolan Earley put the Miners (21-30) ahead quickly with a two-run homer in the bottom of the first, but Coco Johnson answered for the ThunderBolts (28-22) by leading off the bottom of the inning with a solo shot of his own.

Southern Illinois got that run right back in the second as Culver Plant and London Lindley drew back-to-back two-out walks and Craig Massey hit an RBI single.

The score was 3-1 into the bottom of the fifth, when Coco Johnson was hit by a pitch and Tim Zier doubled. Kyle Wood’s sacrifice fly made it a one-run game and Riley Krane’s two-run homer gave the Bolts their first lead.

The Miners put the lead in jeopardy when they moved runners to second and third with only one out in the seventh inning. Josh Glick struck out Ryan Lashley and, after a walk loaded the bases, Scott Kuzminsky struck out Craig Massoni to end the threat.

The ThunderBolts put it away with three runs in the seventh. Krane reached on a fielder’s choice and moved to third on a Blair Beck single. Krane scored on an overthrow when Beck stole second. Ransom LaLonde followed with a two-run homer.

Corey Bass finished the Windy City scoring with an RBI single in the eighth.

Southern Illinois added a run in the ninth on a Lashley RBI base hit to make the final 8-4.

Clay Chapman (3-4) allowed three runs in six innings for the win and Zach Cooper (2-6) took the loss, allowing four runs in 4.2 innings.

The ThunderBolts take four days off for the all-star break before returning to action Friday night at Washington. Larry Balkwill, Scott Kuzminsky, Brian Loconsole and Kyle Wood will play in Wednesday night’s game at 7:05 in Joliet. The rest of the team returns to action to take on the Wild Things at 6:05 Friday night at Wild Things Park.
