Westcott dominates in 5-2 win

Bolts 5 Things 2

CRESTWOOD, IL – Zac Westcott allowed only one hit in eight innings and Kyle Wood picked up three hits and three RBIs as the ThunderBolts thrilled a crowd of 2,482 at Standard Bank Stadium, picking up their first win of the year, 5-2 over the Washington Wild Things Saturday night.

Washington (1-1) got a single out of Mike Hill in the top of the first inning and would not get another the rest of the night. They stranded two in the first.

Wood’s single in the bottom of the second started the ThunderBolts’ first rally. He would score with two outs on a Blair Beck double. Ransom LaLonde followed by doubling on the next pitch to score Beck and make it 2-0.

The Wild Things quickly responded as Trevin Sonnier reached on a dropped third strike and Rashad Brown walked. A double steal coupled with an error allowed one run to score and a Hill sacrifice fly tied the game at two.

It remained tied into the fifth, when Coco Johnson began a two-out rally with a base hit. Tim Zier followed with a single and David Kerian loaded the bases with a walk. Wood followed with a double to deep center field that cleared the bases and gave the ThunderBolts (1-1) a 5-2 lead.

Westcott (1-0) retired 13 of the final 14 batters he faced to wrap up the victory. He struck out a career-high nine and walked three. Brian Loconsole threw a perfect ninth for his first save.

Trevor Belicek (0-1) allowed five runs in five innings and took the loss.

The ThunderBolts and Wild Things will finish their three-game set Sunday afternoon as Brady Muller makes his season debut for the Bolts on the mound. He will be opposed by Washington’s Chase Cunningham. First pitch from Standard Bank Stadium is scheduled for 2:05. It is a JULIE Inc. Family Day at the stadium with a petting zoo at the park courtesy of Animals for Awareness – Palos Park. Fans not in attendance can hear the broadcast on WXAV 88.3 FM and wxav.com.
