Bolts lose doubleheader

Bums 1 Bolts 0

TRAVERSE CITY, MI – The ThunderBolts lost both ends of a doubleheader at Wuerfel Park Saturday night as the Traverse City Beach Bums won game one 1-0 and took game two 4-3 in nine innings.

Brady Muller pitched out of trouble in the first two innings of game one, leaving men in scoring position both times. He then settled in and retired eight of nine hitters.

Austin Bembnowski, pitching for Traverse City (21-29), was even better, retiring 16 straight ThunderBolts after a Coco Johnson single in the first.

Santisteban ended the dueling shutouts as he led off the fifth with his first career homer.

The Bolts (24-26) had their best scoring chance in the seventh. Cody Keefer walked, but pinch runner Blair Beck was picked off of first. Ransom LaLonde was hit by a pitch and Charley Thurber singled to put men at the corners, but Andrew Brockett got the final out to pick up his fifth save.

Bembnowski (2-0) went 6.2 shutout innings for the win and Muller (1-5) took his second straight 1-0 loss, going the distance in defeat.

The Beach Bums got game two started with a 1-0 lead on Jeff DeBlieux’s third-inning homer. Later in the inning, hits for Marcos Derkes and Steven Patterson brought in another run to make it 2-0.

Kramer Champlin no-hit the Bolts for the first five innings before Blair Beck led off the sixth with a single. John Williams followed with a double and Beck scored on a Coco Johnson groundout. With two outs, Cody Keefer hit a flyball that Casey Rodrigue lost in the lights to score Williams and tie the game.

It stayed 2-2 into the ninth, when both teams started the inning with a man at second base. Keefer singled home Johnson to lead off the inning and give Windy City their first lead of the night.

In the bottom of the inning, Joel Lima walked two batters to load the bases before DeBlieux’s infield single plated the tying run. Lima followed that by walking Marcos Derkes to end the game.

James Ball (2-3) pitched an inning for the win and Lima (0-1) took the loss.

Traverse City will go for a sweep on Sunday evening at 4:05. They will send Michael Shreves (2-3, 5.51) to the mound. The Bolts have not yet announced a starter. The game broadcast can be heard on WXAV 88.3 FM and WXAV.com.
