ThunderBolts lose on walk-off walk08/20/2015 9:15 PM
WASHINGTON, PA – Matt Ford walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the tenth to hand the ThunderBolts a 6-5 loss against the Washington Wild Things at CONSOL Energy Park Thursday night. Washington (35-46) jumped ahead in the first inning on Sam Mende’s second homer of the series. Back-to-back two out hits for Scott Kalamar and David Popkins made it 2-0. The ThunderBolts (33-47) bounced back nicely, tying the score with two runs in the third. Mike Torres doubled and came in to score on a Ransom LaLonde groundout. Max White, who reached on a fielder’s choice, scored on Jacob Tanis’s single. They took their first lead the following inning when they loaded the bases with two outs on a walk and an infield single before Austin Gallagher was intentionally put on. White hit a bases clearing triple to make it 5-2 ThunderBolts. The lead was short-lived as the Wild Things scored one in the bottom of the fourth. White dropped a flyball hit by Andrew Heck, allowing Daniel Poma to score. Washington evened the score the following inning on a two-run triple for Jimmy Yezzo. Yezzo stood at third with no outs, but the Windy City bullpen held him there. The game remained 5-5 into the tenth inning. Windy City didn’t threaten in the top half and in the bottom, Austin Wobrock hit a leadoff single. Maxx Garrett walked and, after a wild pitch moved the runners up, Heck was intentionally walked. Ford worked the count full and fouled off two pitches before taking ball four for the game-winner. Tim Giel (4-5) struck out four in two perfect innings for the win. Joel Lima (3-4) gave up the game-winning run for the loss. The ThunderBolts will head to Traverse City for a four-game series with the Beach Bums starting with a doubleheader on Friday. Game one will see Travis Tingle (5-7, 3.21) facing Anthony Montefusco (3-4, 3.97). Dyllon Nuernberg will make his first start in two years in game two against Traverse City’s Alex Phillips (2-3, 6.64). Game one is scheduled to start at 5:05 and the broadcast of both games can be heard on WXAV 88.3 FM and wxav.com. |
