Things 5 Bolts 4

CRESTWOOD, IL – The Washington Wild Things scored three runs in the ninth to erase a 4-2 ThunderBolts lead, sending the ThunderBolts to their tenth straight one-run loss, 5-4 at Standard Bank Stadium on Thursday.

David Popkins hit his league-leading 13th home run of the season to start the scoring in the second inning.

The ThunderBolts tied the score at one in the fourth when Coco Johnson doubled and moved to third on a Mike Torres single. Jonathan Garcia hit into a double play to score Johnson.

They took the lead at 2-1 in the sixth. Ryan Deitrich hit a leadoff double and moved to third on a bunt. He scored on a passed ball.

Washington tied the score the following inning. Matt Ford and Andrew Heck singled to put runners at the corners with two outs. Ford stole home on the back end of a double steal to knot the score at two.

Windy City quickly took the lead back with two in the seventh. Austin Gallagher doubled and Jacob Tanis bunted him over. A throwing error on the bunt allowed Gallagher to score. Two walks loaded the bases before Tanis scored when Johnson was hit by a pitch.

Washington came back in the ninth when they put two on with one out on a walk and a single. Maxx Garrett singled to left and the ball skipped past Deitrich to score two runs and tie the game. Garrett made it all the way to third and scored on a Heck sacrifice fly to win the game 5-4.

Tim Giel pitched 1.1 scoreless inning of relief for the win and James Jones (0-3) blew his fourth save to take the loss.

The ThunderBolts will welcome the Traverse City Beach Bums to town for a three-game series starting on Friday. Standard Bank Stadium will host a pint glass giveaway courtesy of Lakeshore Beverage.
