ThunderBolts' comeback falls short in 10-9 loss08/04/2014 9:54 PM
CRESTWOOD, IL –The ThunderBolts scored seven runs in the final three innings, but it wasn’t enough as they left the tying and winning runs on base in the eighth inning before rain shortened a 10-9 Gateway Grizzlies win at Standard Bank Stadium Monday night. Ryan Soares singled in the first inning for Windy City and scored on a Ryan Tufts base hit to make the early score 1-0 in favor of Windy City, but the Grizzlies answered with five runs in the top of the second. There were six hits in the inning and Madison Beaird, Michael Johnson and TJ Bennett each picked up RBIs. Gateway made their lead 6-1 in the fourth on a Bennett RBI single, but the Bolts responded in the bottom of the inning with a Garrett Carey RBI groundout. The Grizzlies again extended their lead to five in the sixth. Johnson drove in Richard Siegel on a double. Once again, though, the Bolts responded with Ryan McIntyre singling and eventually scoring on a wild pitch. The Grizzlies appeared to put the game away with a three-run seventh. The big hit in that inning was Johnson’s two-run triple, making the score 10-3. The ThunderBolts continued to fight, however, scoring two runs in the seventh on a Tufts two-run single, his fourth hit of the night. In the eighth, they came up with four straight singles, including an RBI hit from Soares and a two-run knock for Mike Torres. Torres stole second and scored on an error to make the score 10-9. Kyle Robinson and McIntyre both walked and stood at second and third with one out, but Richard Barrett came out of the ‘pen and struck out two hitters to end the game for his 14th save. Tucker Jensen (7-2) gave up five runs in 6.2 innings for the win and Travis Tingle (6-5) took the loss, allowing seven runs in six innings. The ThunderBolts will take Tuesday off before starting a six-game road trip on Wednesday at Southern Illinois. Josh Spence (0-6, 5.79) will start for the Bolts against the Miners’ Rick Teasley (7-2, 3.13). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 and the broadcast can be heard on meridix.com.
