Bolts drop second straight one run contest in Schaumburg

SCHAUMBURG, IL – The Schaumburg Boomers scored three runs with two outs in the sixth inning to erase the ThunderBolts’ lead as the Bolts lost their third straight game, 4-3 at Boomers Stadium Sunday afternoon.

The Bolts took an early lead with a second inning run when Andrew Brauer walked and was bunted to second for Mike McGuckin, who singled him home to make it 1-0.

The Boomers tied the score in the bottom of the inning. Mark Nelson walked and Ryan Solberg doubled in front of Mike Valadez, whose groundout scored Nelson.

Windy City, though, quickly climbed back on top. In the third, Mike Torres walked and moved to second on Kyle Robinson’s single. Ryan Soares doubled home Torres and Robinson scored on Evan Button’s sacrifice fly.

The score remained 3-1 into the sixth inning. Jake Fisher, who had retired 13 of the past 15 batters, hit Bobby Martin with two outs and Nelson and Solberg followed with consecutive singles, Solberg’s scoring Martin. Valadez followed with a triple to right field that cleared the bases and gave the Boomers their first lead of the game.

The Bolts had several opportunities to reclaim the lead. In the seventh inning, Kevin Carroll and Heith Hatfield combined to walk the bases loaded but Hatfield got Button to ground out to end the threat. In the ninth, back-to-back two outs walks and a double steal put runners at second and third, but Sean Mahley got Soares to groundout to end the Bolts’ last chance. In all, Windy City left 10 men on base, seven of them in scoring position.

Rey Rodriguez (2-2) allowed three runs in six innings, picking up the win and Fisher (2-5) lasted 6.1 innings, giving up four runs in the loss. Mahley earned his first save.

The ThunderBolts will take Monday off from Frontier League play but they will be in action on Monday night at Standard Bank Stadium at 7:00. The Bolts will take on the Chicago Bandits in an exhibition softball game dubbed “The Battle of the Sexes.” First pitch in Crestwood is scheduled for 7:00 and the game will be broadcast on WXAV 88.3 FM and wxav.com.
