Bolts power way to doubleheader sweep

O’FALLON, MO – Chad Cregar hit three home runs and drove in seven runs, leading the ThunderBolts to a doubleheader sweep of the River City Rascals with 6-4 and 6-2 wins at T.R. Hughes Ballpark Saturday night. The win keeps the ThunderBolts’ playoff hopes alive.

The Bolts got game one off to a strong start. With Chris Wade at first, Mike Torres hit his first home run of the year to go up 2-0.

The Rascals quickly responded. In the bottom of the first, they sent nine men to the plate and scored four runs on five hits. Blayne Weller was unable to get out of the first and the ThunderBolts trailed by two.

Cregar’s first home run of the night, a two-run shot in the third tied the score at four. Windy City was able to take the lead back for the first time since the first on Cregar’s RBI fifth-inning single. He brought home Torres, who scored three runs in the game.

Ryan Cuneo doubled to lead off the sixth and crossed the plate on a Jareck West groundout, giving the ThunderBolts a 6-4 lead.

That would be the final as Duke Dykeman, Shane Zegarac, Michael Click and Willy Kesler combined to throw 6.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.

Zegarac (3-1) earned the win and Cory Caruso (0-2) took the loss.

Game two was all ThunderBolts from the start. Dustin Williams threw a complete game and allowed only four hits.

Cregar again provided the offensive support. His solo home run in the second made the score 1-0. It was his 30th homer of the year, making him the third player in Frontier League history to reach the 30 mark. He added his 31st in the third inning. After C.J. Gillman singled and Torres walked, Cregar’s blast made it 4-0.

River City scored their first run in the third on a Doug Sanders RBI groundout. Chris Andreas homered in the fifth to make it 4-2.

Brandon Decker put the game away in the top of the sixth. His two-run homer was his 18th of the year and made the final score 6-2.

Williams (11-6) earned the win and Preston Vancil (7-10) went five innings for the loss.

The ThunderBolts will conclude the regular season Sunday night at 6:05 at T.R. Hughes Ballpark. They need a win and three Southern Illinois losses to qualify for the postseason. Tyson Corley (5-8, 2.55) is expected to start for the Bolts against Justin Sarratt (2-4, 4.87). The broadcast can be heard on WXAV, 88.3 fm and wxav.com.
