WASHINGTON, PA – Jovan Rosa’s RBI groundout in the bottom of the eighth inning provided the only run for the Washington Wild Things as they defeated the ThunderBolts 1-0 at CONSOL Energy Park Saturday night.
The ThunderBolts got a man to third base in the second inning when Ryan Cuneo tripled with two outs, but he was left there and Windy City did not reach third the rest of the night.
The Wild Things had a good early scoring chance when they loaded the bases on two singles and an erro with two outs in the bottom of the second. Tyson Corley forced Vinnie Fayard to groundout to end that threat and the game went on, scoreless.
Windy City had only four hits the rest of the way after the Cuneo triple. They had only one more hitter reach scoring position and they left six men on base through eight innings against Justin Hall.
After a leadoff walk in the fourth, Corley had retired 13 straight men before he walked Fayard. A Darian Sandford single chased Corley from the game and Shane Zegarac was called on with one out in the eighth. Gus Benusa’s bunt single loaded the bases before Rosa’s groundout provided the game’s only run.
Hall retired the ThunderBolts in order in the ninth to secure the win. He allowed just five hits and did not walk anybody in the complete game win, improving to 5-7. Corley (4-7) took the loss despite giving up only four hits and striking out five.
The finale of the four-game series will take place at CONSOL Energy Park on Sunday night at 6:05. Stephen Sauer (6-6, 3.68) starts for the Bolts against Washington’s Chris Smith (8-5, 2.84). The game can be heard on sportsjuice.com.
