For the second time in a month, the Windy City ThunderBolts have had a pitcher signed by a big league organization. Following Bobby O’Neill’s invitation to join the Marlins on December 30, reliever Wes Alsup has had his contract purchased by the Seattle Mariners.
Alsup joined the ThunderBolts during the 2011 season’s opening weekend and elevated to the closer’s role when Bradley Blanks was signed by the Brewers. He finished the season with a 1-2 record and 4.24 ERA with eight saves. He also struck out 61 hitters in just 34 innings, a league-high 16.1 strikeouts per nine innings.
Alsup went through stretches in which he was almost unhittable. His best such stretch came when he did not allow an earned run between July 20 and August 14, a period of ten innings over 11 games.
This will be Alsup’s second chance in affiliated ball. His 2.05 ERA in 22 games with the Joliet JackHammers in 2010 got him signed by the Atlanta Braves. In nine games with Atlanta’s Class A affiliate in Rome, he went 1-2 with an 8.79 ERA.
Alsup is the 31st ThunderBolt player on their active roster to be signed by a Major League team since 2004.
