After having four players signed by Major League organizations during the 2010 season, the ThunderBolts have announced three more players moving up during the off-season. The contracts of pitchers Andrew Werner and Rod Scurry have been purchased by the San Diego Padres. Also signed today is pitcher Ryan Bollinger who has been signed by the White Sox.
Werner was acquired in a June trade with the Evansville Otters. In 16 starts with the ThunderBolts, he went 10-4 with a 3.51 ERA in 16 starts as he helped guide the team to the playoffs. Werner’s swan song with the Bolts came in game four of the Division Series against the Traverse City Beach Bums. He threw five and a third hitless innings out of the bullpen in the season-ending loss.
Scurry was a late addition to the ThunderBolts roster, signing with the team on August 5 and appearing five times out of the bullpen. He finished the year with an 0-1 record and 7.50 ERA. For Scurry, this will be the second stint in affiliated ball. He went 5-2 with a 3.90 ERA over two seasons with Tri-Valley, the low-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies in 2008 and 2009.
Standard Bank Stadium has become a pipeline to affiliated baseball as the ThunderBolts have had 16 players signed by big league organizations since the start of the 2009 season, more than any other Frontier League team.
