Hall and Jernstad Return to Windy City04/08/2010 1:16 PM
The Windy City ThunderBolts have announced that two key pieces to the pitching staff will be returning for the 2010 season. Nick Hall and Matt Jernstad have both signed their contracts for the upcoming season. Hall and Jernstad have been teammates for a number of years, as they both pitched for Northern Illinois University. Both pitchers will be returning to the ThunderBolts after being picked up by major league clubs. Nick Hall was picked up by the San Diego Padres organization after the 2009 season, while Jernstad’s contract was purchased by the White Sox early in the 2010 year.
Nick Hall is a 6’5’’, right-handed pitcher out of Crystal Lake, IL. He spent four years in DeKalb, IL, pitching for the NIU Huskies. He finished his college days as the career leader in games started. His professional career began in 2006, when he was signed by the Philadelphia Phillies as a non-drafted free agent. He pitched in 12 games in the Gulf Coast League and posted a 2-1 record. After taking two years off from professional baseball, he signed with the Windy City ThunderBolts in 2009. He appeared in 40 games and garnered 4 wins with only 1 loss. He also had an ERA of 2.41, which was good for 2nd on the team, and had 59 strikeouts in 41 innings pitched. Hall emerged as the team’s closer later in the season, and produced 11 saves. He was essential to the late season run, pitching in 14 games in the month of August and not allowing a single run. Hall looks to carryover his late season success into 2010.
Matt Jernstad is a southpaw graduate of Oswego High School. In his time spent at Northern Illinois, he produced an 8-6 record with a 5.74 ERA and struck out 116 batters. The ThunderBolts acquired Jernstad as a free agent in 2008. In his brief stint in ’08, he pitched in 7 innings and only allowed 3 hits. In 2009, the 23 year old led the Frontier League in games pitched with 44. Jernstad was also the ThunderBolts team leader in ERA at 2.31, and opponents’ batting averages at .192. He had a record of 7-4, pitching in 78 innings, and striking out 97 batters. Jernstad pitched both as a starter and reliever, but in each situation, he was getting batters out at a consistent rate.
ThunderBolts Field Manager Mike Kashirsky was very excited to hear that he is getting two of his top pitchers back this season. Kahirsky stated, "Well, Jerny and Hall are great pitchers, and most importantly, great people. We have a top of the line starter and closer coming back in 2010. I am very excited to have the opportunity to manage them this season." Jernstad and Hall were numbers 1 and 2 respectively in the ERA category for the ThunderBolts in 2009. After being with affiliated organizations in the offseason, they look to be more experienced and even better in 2010. The ThunderBolts organization is very excited to welcome these two pitchers back to Crestwood. The Windy City club was 2nd in the Frontier League in ERA, allowing an average of 4.20 runs a game. Bringing Hall and Jernstad back should give the ThunderBolts a chance to be at the top of the leader board in ERA in 2010, and more importantly, atop the Frontier League standings. The ThunderBolts home opener is scheduled for Thursday, May 20th at Standard Bank Stadium in Crestwood, Illinois at 7:05 p.m. against the Kalamazoo Kings. Individual game tickets will go on sale at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 1st. For more information, call the ThunderBolts box office at 708-489-2255 or visit us on the web at www.wcthunderbolts.com.
