Tommy Thompson to join Chicago White Sox staff10/23/2009 11:27 AM
Crestwood, IL – The Windy City ThunderBolts professional baseball team, 2007 and 2008 Frontier League champions, have announced the resignation of field manager Tommy Thompson so that he can accept a position with the Chicago White Sox organization. Thompson will be splitting his time between the White Sox spring training operation in Glendale, Arizona; with their North Carolina-based minor affiliates; and with the Major League players in Chicago.
Thompson served as the ThunderBolts’ field manager for the 2009 season, leading the team to a 54-40 record and their third consecutive Frontier League playoff appearance. Windy City finished the regular season with the highest team batting average (.285) and second lowest team earned run average (4.20) in the Frontier League. Five players from the 2009 ThunderBolts have moved to Major League Baseball organizations.
“I would like to thank Mike Stranczek and Steve Tahsler for giving me the opportunity to manage in Windy City,” commented Thompson. “Even though we did not win the title, 2009 was one of my most fulfilling seasons in over 30 years of professional baseball. I thank the ThunderBolts’ staff and booster club for their work this season, and our fans for coming out in record numbers in 2009. I’m excited about the opportunity to work with the Chicago White Sox, and wish the ThunderBolts the best of luck in 2010.”
“Tommy did an outstanding job for us last season and we congratulate him on his position with the White Sox,” stated ThunderBolts’ general manager Steve Tahsler. “He is one of the most knowledgeable baseball people whom I have met. I’m confident that he will be tremendously successful with the White Sox.”
The ThunderBolts will introduce their 2010 field manager and coaching staff to fans at a World Series viewing party in conjunction with game 1 on Wednesday, October 28. The event will be held at Oliver’s in Oak Forest and begin at 6:30 pm.
The Windy City ThunderBolts finished the 2009 season with a franchise record for attendance, posting a 26% increase as the team qualified for the Frontier League playoffs for the third consecutive season.
