 The Frontier League office announced their post-season awards and All-Stars today for the 2009 season and the list was kind to the Windy City ThunderBolts. Windy City has one man on the post-season All-Star team. Gilberto Mejia was named the league’s top second baseman. The ThunderBolts also have an award winner, as outfielder Vinnie Scarduzio was named the winner of the Jason Simontacchi Award given to the best player in the league who had no previous professional experience.
With three games still to be played in the Frontier League schedule, Mejia is leading all second basemen and is third in the league overall with a .333 batting average. He leads the league in stolen bases with 47, triples with ten and runs scored at 82. He is second in hits with 121. Mejia also has nine home runs on the season. With one more, he would become just the second player in league history with double digit doubles, triples, and home runs.
Scarduzio, who played collegiately at Florida Gulf Coast University, leads all true rookies in the Frontier League with 16 home runs, a mark that places him second on the ThunderBolts. On the season, he is hitting .272 with 18 doubles, two triples and 47 RBI, and has been effective at all three outfield positions for Windy City. With the award, Scarduzio becomes the first player in ThunderBolts history to be named the Rookie of the Year.

Mejia and Scarduzio will lead the team into Rockford for the final three games of the regular season as the ThunderBolts make a push for the postseason. They currently sit one game behind both Southern Illinois and River City in the wild card and west division races respectively. Windy City will host the Chicago Blackhawks Alumni softball game on September 7 at 4:00 p.m. It is a 16” softball game between the Blackhawks Alumni and the Chicago Fire and Police Departments. Stan Mikita, Dennis Savard and Tony Esposito are among the alumni who will be in attendance. Tickets to the game are $12 and are available at the Standard Bank Stadium box office.
