The Windy City ThunderBolts have completed a trade with the Midwest Sliders on Friday to acquire third baseman Gil Zayas in exchange for reliever Adam Dominick. Zayas is hitting .291 for the Sliders this year.
Zayas has 15 doubles, five home runs, and 34 RBI in 57 games this season. He spent the 2008 season with the now defunct Atlantic City Surf of the Can-Am League. There, he hit .260 with five home runs and 30 RBIs over 62 games in his rookie campaign. He played his college ball at St. John’s, where he hit .353 with 53 RBIs his junior year. In 2006, he was an all-star in the New England Collegiate Baseball League with the Manchester (CT) Silkworms. He hit .333 with eight home runs in 42 games.
In picking up Zayas, the ThunderBolts not only restocked their lineup for the stretch run, but filled an important hole defensively. Starting third baseman, Nate Hall was put on the 14 day disabled list earlier this week.
Dominick had been one of the primary setup men in the ThunderBolts bullpen recently, but he is expected to jump into the starting rotation for Midwest. Over the past few weeks, the Sliders have lost James Albury and Caleb Graham to major league organizations and Kyle Kearcher and Nate Kafka to injury, creating their need for pitching. Dominick is 2-3 with a 3.38 ERA in 25 appearances. He was 4-2 with a 5.89 ERA for last year’s ThunderBolts.
The ThunderBolts head out on the road for a weekend series at River City starting on Friday night. All three games can be heard on sportsjuice.com. For more information or tickets, call 708-489-BALL or visit wcthunderbolts.com
