Windy City sweeps doubleheader, series07/09/2009 10:22 PM
The Windy City ThunderBolts got a two out double in the bottom of the seven inning of game one of their doubleheader against the Kalamazoo Kings and carried the momentum over into the nightcap, sweeping the Kings 3-2 and 2-0.
Windy City scored the initial run of the game in the bottom of the second inning. After Nate Hall led off the frame with a double, he still stood on second with two outs when Tyler Farrar, who had not had an at-bat since June 24 due to a throat injury, ripped a single into leftfield on the first pitch he saw, scoring Hall for a 1-0 ThunderBolts advantage.
Kalamazoo would reply with single runs in the fourth and sixth innings to take a 2-1 lead heading into the final frame. In the bottom of the seventh, Kings’ closer Tommy Mejia retired the first two batters on strikes. Down to their last out, Gilberto Mejia singled for the Bolts followed by a single by Guillermo Martinez to put runners on first and third. J. T. Restko came to the plate and the newly selected All-Star delivered, crushing a double into the leftfield corner, bringing around both runners, giving Windy City their second consecutive walkoff win.
Ross Stout (6-1) once again pitched well for the ThunderBolts going the distance allowing seven hits, not walking a batter and striking out eight, retaking the league lead in punchouts with 64. Tommy Mejia (3-2) took the loss for Kalamazoo.
Game two would start off well for the ThunderBolts as after a scoreless top of the first from Tyler Kelsey, Gilberto Mejia took the second pitch of the bottom half of the inning over the rightfield wall for a 1-0 Windy City lead. Three batters later, J. T. Restko drove a ball deep in the gap in right-center. The ball kicked off the top of the wall as Restko raced around the bases for his first triple of the season. Wade Lamont batted next and brought home Restko with a single and a 2-0 Bolts edge.
Though the Kings got baserunners on throughout the game, Tyler Kelsey and the bullpen kept Kalamazoo at bay, keeping the Kings off the board. In the seventh, Kalamazoo got two on with two out and brought Tim Brown to the plate. The first baseman drove a ball to deep right field, but got under it just enough for Vinnie Scarduzio to make the catch on the warning track to preserve the victory.
Stephen Flake (1-2) picked up the game two win in relief throwing two perfect innings striking out two. Nick Hall recorded the final out for his first save of the year. Joe DiPietro (3-4) surrendered those first inning runs for the Kings, taking the loss.
Friday the Traverse City Beach Bums come to town for their only visit of the season with a Fill ’R Up Friday and Camp Out Night at Standard Bank Stadium. It is also the American Cancer Society Jersey off the Back Night with a silent auction taking place during the game to purchase the jerseys that the ThunderBolts will be wearing during the contest. Dylan Axelrod (1-0, 3.38) will start for the Bolts against Brett Bostelman (5-1, 1.95) going for the Beach Bums in a matchup of Frontier League All-Stars.
