TF SOUTH, SOUTH SUBURBAN GRAD NICK DAMAS JOINS THUNDERBOLTS
Crestwood, IL – The Windy City ThunderBolts professional baseball team, 2007 and 2008 Frontier League champions, have signed former Chicago White Sox farmhand Nick Damas to a contract for the 2009 season. Damas, an outfielder, resides in Willow Springs and is a graduate of Thornton Fractional South High School and South Suburban College.
The White Sox signed Damas as a non-drafted free agent last spring. Damas saw action for the Bristol Sox (Appalachian League), Kannapolis Intimidators (South Atlantic League), and Great Falls Voyagers (Pioneer League) last season. He combined for a .189 batting average with four doubles, two home runs, and eight RBI in 37 games.
Damas signed with the White Sox after leading Bellevue University to the NAIA World Series last spring. Damas led the Bruins in hitting (.420) and home runs (12) while ranking third in RBI (47) and doubles (17) and was named All-Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference. He led the MCAC in home runs and ranked third in batting. Damas spent the 2007 season at Marshall University, hitting .284 in 47 games.
Damas led South Suburban College to the 2006 Junior College World Series, finishing the season with a .390 batting average, five home runs, 43 RBI, and 24 stolen bases.
“Nick is an outstanding all-around athlete whom I remember from his days at South Suburban,” commented ThunderBolts’ bench coach Mike Kashirsky. “We expect Nick to battle for one of our starting outfield spots this season.”
In other transactions, the ThunderBolts temporarily removed second baseman Gilberto Mejia, third baseman Nate Hall, and infielder Drew George from the spring training roster. Mejia, Hall, and George will all be late for spring training and be added back to the active roster once they arrive in Crestwood.
The Windy City ThunderBolts open the 2009 season on Thursday, May 21 at Standard Bank Stadium in Crestwood. For more information, please visit us online at www.wcthunderbolts.com or contact the ThunderBolts at 708-489-BALL or [email protected]
