The Windy City ThunderBolts professional baseball team, 2007 and 2008 Frontier League Champions, has announced the signing of shortstop Tyler Farrar to a contract for the 2009 season. Farrar was signed following the ThunderBolts’ open workout this past weekend in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
Tyler Farrar completed his collegiate career at Austin Peay State University last spring being named First Team Ohio Valley Conference while hitting .274 with 11 doubles, two triples, nine home runs, 56 RBI, and 20 stolen bases in 56 games for the Governors. Farrar was a Second Team OVC honoree during his junior season when he led Austin Peay with a .341 batting average and had 16 doubles, two triples, seven home runs, 44 RBI, and 17 stolen bases. Farrar’s .341 batting average in 2007 is the eighth highest all-time at Austin Peay.
Farrar led the Governors to the 2007 NCAA Tournament, where he hit a home run off then Vanderbilt pitcher David Price. Price was a first round draft selection of the Tampa Bay Rays and pitched key innings down the stretch and in the 2008 playoffs for Tampa Bay.
Farrar played for the Alexandria Aces of the United League last summer, seeing action in 15 games. He was the only one of the 28 players in attendance on Saturday to be offered a contract, though conversations are being held with five other players from the workout.
“Tyler impressed the scouts in attendance at our workout with his overall performance, both in the field and at bat,” commented ThunderBolts’ general manager Steve Tahsler. “Success in the Ohio Valley Conference generally translates well into success in the Frontier League, and we expect Tyler to battle for a starting position at either shortstop or third base this season.”
