The 2007 Frontier League Champion Windy City ThunderBolts professional baseball team have announced the signing of right-handed pitcher Jason Lowey to a contact for the 2008 season.
Loewy made his professional debut last summer with the Macon Music of the South Coast League, where he was teammates of recent ThunderBolt acquisition Ross Stout. In 19 games in Macon, Lowey allowed only five earned runs in 29 innings while striking out 37 batters. He finished with a 1-2 record and notched on save in leading the Music to the South Coast League finals. Loweys 1.55 ERA was the lowest among relief pitchers in the SCL in 2007.
Prior to joining the Music, Lowey was a two-way player at Mercer University in Macon, where he finished 1-1 with a 4.36 ERA in 17 games last spring, striking out 25 batters in 27 innings. Lowey also saw action as an outfielder, hitting .216 in 44 games for a Bears team that finished second in the Atlantic Sun Conference.
Jason quickly established himself as one of the top pitchers in the South Coast League last summer, commented ThunderBolts field manager Brian Nelson. I expect him to play a key role on our staff this season.
In addition, the ThunderBolts announced the completion of a trade involving right-handed pitcher Josiah Ziegler, with the hurler being sent to the Gary SouthShore RailCats in exchange for a player to be named later. Ziegler appeared in five games for the ThunderBolts last season, surrendering ten hits and four runs in 9.2 innings.
