 Flake comes to Windy City after spending the 2008 season with the Gulf Coast Marlins, rookie league affiliate for the Florida Marlins. He appeared in 12 games in the Gulf Coast League, notching a 2-1 record and 1.71 ERA, striking out 22 batters while walking only five in 21 innings. Florida drafted Flake in the 34th round in 2007 out of Southern Polytechnic State University in Marietta, Georgia. Flake led the Hornets to a 47-18 record last spring and a #14 ranking in the final NAIA poll, the highest ranking in school history. Flake led SPUS with an 11-3 record in 2007 to go along with a 2.64 ERA, striking out 104 batters in 109 innings. Flake tied for the Southern States Athletic Conference lead in wins and led the conference in inning pitched while finishing fourth in ERA, third in batting average against (.205), and second in strikeouts. Flake was named First Team All-Conference and All-Region and NAIA Honorable Mention All-American in 2007 along with receiving the SSAC’s Gold Glove award for pitchers. Flake pitched at North Georgia College & State University for three seasons before transferring to Southern Poly. He was named Second Team NAIA All-American in 2004 and compiled a 37-15 record with a 3.07 ERA and 379 strikeouts in 395.2 innings over his college career. “"Stephen has the ability to be a top of rotation guy with our pitching staff,” commented ThunderBolts’ field manager Brian Nelson. “He comes to us after a tremendous first professional season with the Florida Marlins and can be a difference maker for the 2008 Thunderbolts."
