Zack Jones became the latest member of the Windy City ThunderBolts to be signed by a Major League organization when his contract was purchased this week by the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Jones spent the 2017 season with the ThunderBolts and appeared in 13 games. He hit .250 with a .455 on-base percentage, two home runs and five RBIs. After signing with the ThunderBolts on July 3, his first professional hit was a home run against the Normal CornBelters on July 23. He ended up with at least one hit in four of his first five games played. His final hit with the Bolts was his second home run, coming in the final game of the season, a 6-5 win over Schaumburg.
A local product out of Park Ridge and Maine South High School, Jones joined the Bolts out of Trinity Christian College, where he batted .357 as a senior this spring. He also saved five games as the closer on the Trolls’ pitching staff.
Jones is the fifth member of the 2017 ThunderBolts, and first position player, to get signed by a big league organization. He joins Brady Muller as former ThunderBolts who signed with the Diamondbacks in 2017. Five players is more than any other Frontier League team this year and the most for any ThunderBolts team since 2012.
