Boomers 6 Bolts 3
CRESTWOOD, IL – The Schaumburg Boomers scored five runs in the fifth inning and the ThunderBolts were unable to recover in a 6-3 loss at Standard Bank Stadium Sunday afternoon. The loss marks the first time this season the Bolts have been swept.
Windy City (17-10) jumped on the board quickly as Tim Zier led off the bottom of the first with a single. He stole second and scored on a Ransom LaLonde single.
The Boomers (13-14) tied the score in the third as Ino Patron doubled and Justin Byrd singled him in, but the ThunderBolts responded immediately with a run in the bottom of the frame. Again Zier singled and moved to third on a LaLonde base hit. When LaLonde stole second base, Zier scored on the double steal.
The second lead of the game did not last as Schaumburg got a leadoff double from Shawn Payne in the fifth. He scored when Patron dropped down a bunt and Larry Balkwill’s throw sailed into left field. Patron advanced all the way to third on the play. The bases were loaded on a walk and a hit batter and Jordan Dean broke the tie with a two-run single. Dusty Robinson followed with a two-run double to make it 6-2.
The ThunderBolts loaded the bases in the eighth as they tried to make a comeback. Corey Bass was walked to force in a run but Evan Boyd came out of the bullpen and stranded the three runners. In all, the Bolts stranded ten men, six in scoring position.
Scott Schultz (2-1) went seven innings for Schaumburg and earned the win. Mitchell Cody (0-1) allowed six runs (three earned) in five innings for the loss. Boyd recorded the final four outs for his second save.
The ThunderBolts take Monday off before embarking on a six-game road trip on Tuesday. Game one against the Lake Erie Crushers on Tuesday will pit Windy City’s Brady Muller (1-3, 4.55) against Lake Erie’s Todd Kibby (2-2, 3.94). First pitch from All Pro Freight Stadium is scheduled for 6:05 and the broadcast can be heard on WXAV 88.3 FM and wxav.com.
