Zak Wasserman has become the first member of the 2016 Windy City ThunderBolts to be signed by a Major League organization. His contract was purchased by the New York Yankees on Saturday.
Wasserman was in his third season with the ThunderBolts and this is the second time he has been picked up after one appearance. After one scoreless inning in 2014, he was signed by the Arizona Diamondbacks. He appeared in 16 games in the Arizona League and posted a 3.60 ERA.
Wasserman rejoined the ThunderBolts in 2015 and started 15 games, going 4-5 with a 6.75 ERA. He returned to the bullpen to start the 2016 campaign and pitched a scoreless seventh inning in the season opening win over Joliet on Thursday.
Wasserman is the first Frontier League player to get signed this year; he is the first ThunderBolt to join the Yankees organization since Matt Jernstad in 2010 and the third Frontier Leaguer signed by the Yankees in the last year.
