Slammers 7 Bolts 3
CRESTWOOD, IL – The ThunderBolts’ six-game winning streak came to an end Tuesday as the Joliet Slammers banged out seven runs on 14 hits on their way to a 7-3 victory over the Bolts at Standard Bank Stadium.
The Slammers loaded the bases with one out in the second but did not score and it was the ThunderBolts who scored first when they loaded the bases on two walks and a hit batsman in the bottom of the third. Zach Aakhus swung at the first pitch he saw and lined a bases clearing double to right-center field, making the score 3-0.
It was the fourth straight day the Bolts scored first, but also the fourth straight day they lost that lead when Joliet scored two in the fourth and three in the fifth.
The Slammers used doubles from Niko Vasquez, Grant DeBruin and Kolin Conner to get their first two runs and their runs in the fifth came on RBI hits from Jerod Yakubik (triple), DeBruin (single) and Conner (single).
Joliet added a run in the seventh, making it 6-3 on Marquis Riley’s sacrifice fly. Riley scored in the ninth on a Vasquez sacrifice fly for their final run.
Windy City managed only four hits but were walked six times by Joliet’s pitching staff as the Bolts left seven men on base. The Slammers stranded 17 baserunners.
Corey Kimes (4-6) picked up the win, allowing three runs on four hits over 6.1 innings and Brian Oliver (4-7) gave up five runs in 4.2 innings to take the loss. Brett Zawacki threw two perfect innings for his first save.
The ThunderBolts and Slammers will meet again on Wednesday night with another 7:05 start at Standard Bank Stadium. There will be a Boomer piggy bank giveaway to the first 1,000 fans sponsored by First Midwest Bank. On the field, Travis Tingle (3-5, 3.87) will start for the Bolts against Joliet’s Andrew Busby (0-3, 3.73). The broadcast can be heard through wcthunderbolts.com.
