C.J. Gillman became the fifth member of the 2012 Windy City ThunderBolts to be signed by a Major League organization Monday when his contract was purchased by the Colorado Rockies.
Gillman played in 59 games for Windy City last season, his rookie year out of the University of Dayton. He signed with the team on June 27.
He was the most versatile player on the team, having hit in every spot in the batting order and playing five different positions, appearing most frequently at third base, where he played 33 games.
Offensively, Gillman provided a .246 batting average and .328 on-base percentage with a home run, 12 doubles and 25 RBIs. He collected three hits and two RBIs in his first start and batted .282 over his first month with the club.
In two seasons at Dayton, Gillman had hit a combined .342, including .378 in his junior year of 2011.
He joins Eric Meyerchick, Donovan Drake, Chris Wade and Mike Recchia as 2012 ThunderBolts who have moved into affiliated ball. Gillman, a native of Littleton, Colorado, just 13 miles south of Coors Field, is the second former-ThunderBolt to be signed by the Colorado Rockies after Robert Perry in 2009. He reported to spring training in Scottsdale, Arizona on Wednesday.
