2013 Roster is Coming into Focus02/26/2013 1:12 PM
The ThunderBolts' Baseball Operations department has been busy this offseason signing new players for the upcoming 2013 season. Learn a little something about each of the new guys before Opening Night on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27th. Travis Tingle, RHP: A 6’5” right-handed pitcher out of the University of Louisville. Travis was a combined 10-4 in his 2 years with the Cardinals. With his versatile arm he has been successful as a starter and reliever. He is expected to battle for a spot in the rotation in 2013. Roberto Reyes, INF: The Lee University product was a 2012 NAIA All-American. Roberto hit 19 doubles, 15 home runs, and was 2nd in the country with 83 RBI’s. Roberto also participated in the 2012 NAIA World Series. He will battle for a corner infield spot in spring training in 2013.
Jared Christensen, LHP: Played his college baseball at Div. II Mesa St. University in Colorado. The 6’4” lefty was a 2-time all-conference pitcher, and led the team with 12 wins in 2012. Jared played the remainder of 2012 season with the Road Warriors, where he was an impressive 3-1. He was their only pitcher with a winning record.
Miles Walding, ULT: Miles was with the Arizona Diamondbacks organization in 2012, where he was a utility player. Prior to 2012, Miles played at Huntingdon College in Alabama, where he hit over .300 and had 31 stolen bases. The athletic and versatile player can play many positions if called upon.
Jeff Harkensee, OF: An outfielder from Arlington Heights Played collegiately at Southeast Louisiana University. Jeff has showed he can handle the bat at all levels. His senior year in college he led the team in home runs and RBI’s. Jeff played in the Freedom League in 2012, where he hit .336 and led the team in RBI’s.
Gary Mayberry, OF: Gary resides in Darien, IL. An all-conference gold Glover at Ashford University. He hit .339 and led his team in triples, home runs, stolen bases, and runs scored. Gary can play all 3 outfield positions with a rare combination of speed and power.
Logan Dodds, RHP: The right handed pitcher from Florida international University was 4-0 in his final 2 years. Prior to FIU Logan was a first team All-American at Miami Dade Junior College where he was named Florida Juco pitcher of the year. He was 11-1 with a 1.73 ERA.
Doug Joyce, C: Doug attended Union University. He was a preseason NAIA all-American and 2 time all-conference player. Doug led the team in RBI’s. He was also a Prospect League All Star during his summer league play.
Nathan Tomaszewski, INF: The corner infielder from Orange County, CA played at LeTourneau University in Texas. Nathan was All-Conference and team MVP. He played for McAllen, TX in the NABL for the remainder of the 2012 season. He will compete for a corner spot with the ThunderBolts this season.
Craig Massey, INF: The 2012 All-American from Faulkner University in Alabama is an infielder who can play all 4 spots. He led Faulkner in hitting with a .425 avgerage and in RBI’s with 58. Craig also participated in the 2012 NAIA World Series.
Ryan Soares, INF: Has played the past 3 seasons in the Detroit Tigers Organization. Ryan was a First Team Division 1 All-American at George Mason University. He hit .438 with 29 doubles, 13 homers, 71 RBI, 57 runs scored, .809 slugging percentage, and a .474 on-base percentage. Ryan is from Harwich, MA.
Jadd Schmeltzer, RHP: The 6’4” 230 lb. right hander comes to us from the Boston Red Sox organization . Jadd had a combined 4.44 ERA during his 2 seasons. The hard throwing right hander was a 49th round draft pick out of Cornell University. Jadd should battle for a late inning job with the ThunderBolts this season.
Travis Strong, RHP: Drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 2010 draft. Travis played 2 seasons with the Orioles with an ERA of 3.97 in 2 years. In 2012 Travis played in the Freedom League and was named Pitcher of The Year. Travis should be a workhorse in the starting rotation in 2013.
Rich Hawkins, LHP: Rich was 3-1 in 2012 with the Winnipeg Goldeyes. Prior to Winnipeg, Rich was an All-American at Oklahoma City University. With OCU in 2012 he was 12-2 with a 1.99 ERA, 90 strikeouts and only 13 walks. He will compete for a spot in the starting rotation in 2013.
Matt Mirabel, C: Matt spent most of the 2012 season with the Joliet Slammers. Matt was an All Missouri Valley catcher in 2012 at Illinois State University. Matt is a Graduate of Mount Carmel High School in Chicago. Matt is an excellent catch & throw guy. He will compete for one of the catcher’s spots on the roster.
Matt Wickswat, LHP: Matt has spent the past 5 seasons in the White Sox farm system. Matt pitched in AA in 2012 where he was a starter and reliever for the Sox. Matt has shown to be most effective as a starter, which he will do in Windy City. He has the most pro experience of any hurlers on the staff which should be of great help to the younger arms on the staff.
