Corley shines in 3-0 win

Tyson Corley

CRESTWOOD, IL –Tyson Corley allowed just two hits and, at one point, retired 16 consecutive hitters on his way to a complete game shutout as the ThunderBolts defeated the Beach Bums 3-0 at Standard Bank Stadium Friday night.

Corley only allowed one baserunner in the first six innings. Chase Burch singled to lead off the second before Corley buckled down and threw four straight perfect frames.

He was given some offense in the fourth. Chad Cregar led off with a double and two batters later, Ryan Cuneo, who had been signed earlier in the day, singled him home for a 1-0 lead.

Windy City added to it in the sixth. They sent eight men to the plate in a two-run inning. Cregar walked and Glover doubled him to third before Zach Aakhus came up with a two-out infield single to score Cregar. With the bases loaded, Jareck West walked to score Glover, making it 3-0.

In the seventh, Corley walked Jose Vargas and Burch singled with one out, putting two men on for the first time all night, but back-to-back flyouts ended the inning.

Corley retires the next six men, including three on strikeouts, and got Vargas swinging to end the game. It was the second complete game and first shutout of his career and his ten strikeouts were a new career high. The ThunderBolts have now thrown seven shouts this year, even with Schaumburg for the most in the league and five of them have been complete games. No one else has more than one.

Corley improved to 2-6 with the win and Bennett Whitmore (5-3) gave up all three runs in the loss.

Windy City begins a six-game roadtrip Saturday night in Joliet. Game one will start at 6:05 at Silver Cross Field and Stephen Sauer (6-4, 3.48) will get the start for the ThunderBolts. Joliet will counter with Jim Schult (4-4, 4.45). The broadcast can be heard on WXAV, 88.3 fm and wxav.com.
